…because, frankly, the outcome of Kent State was a turn of public opinion away from student protesters and toward “law & order” policies. Although people from this vantage point want to romanticize “the Sixties,” Kent State was really the death knell of the anti-war movement and of student activism as a whole. When the grand jury returned its verdict, it let the National Guard off scot-free, while indicting a number of the protest leaders, including some of the wounded. And, of course, two years later, Nixon won 49 of 50 states.
