Americans call a toque a beanie, stocking cap, or sometimes a watch cap, though "toque" (or tuque/touque) is distinctly Canadian for that close-fitting knit winter hat, while in the US, "toque" often brings to mind a chef's hat, notes. Regional US terms also include "toboggan" in the South, say.

Here in WI we used to call them navy hats because we'd buy them at the navy exchange.
