It's social media. Used to be the idiot population was diluted, so the kind of damage they could cause was mitigated to some extent.
Now they can find each other, coalesce, and advocate for stupid in ways never previously imagined.
Dumb Ass Phil at the coffee shop was at least known as Dumb Ass Phil locally and generally able to be ignored. Now DAP has 10,000 friends just like him online that he talks to daily.
And sometimes they go on campaigns.
