On Aug. 5, 1974, President Richard Nixon released tapes related to the Watergate break-in following a Supreme Court ruling in the case, United States v. Nixon. One of the tapes, now known as the "smoking gun" tape, was a conversation between Nixon and his chief of staff, H.R. Haldeman, that proved Nixon tried to cover up the break-in. "CBS Evening News" covered the breaking news on Aug. 5, 1974.
