12. The idea of Individual One stealing the Presidency may have a certain emotional appeal, BUT

I believe that he won in 2016. And again in 2024 because of the carelessness, laziness, cluelessness and apathy of a majority of the American electorate.

I’m a Texan, a Texan who has had his heart broken time and time again by the indifference and sloth of my state’s voters. For over two decades, I’ve asked myself “How the Hell did this happen?” And have asked myself WHY did this happen, despite the Good Guys’ efforts at voter outreach and the ugly consequences of Republican governance.

And this is just Texas. The pattern has been repeated again and again across Old Dixie, Appalachia, and out into the prairies and out onto the Great Plains.

This has only so much to do with corrupted elections and lots more to do with voter laziness and willing self-delusion. Scammers succeed because their targets are willing to be suckers. I believe that the Republicans won in large part because of this, not because of some conspiratorial infrastructure.

I hope for a better future, I’ll fight the good fight, but I fear that a comeback for compassion and genuine decency would require an evolutionary-scale change in American thinking.
