The SS United States was really a wonder of the modern world. Imagine seeing the Empire State Build, lying on it's side, roaring past you at 40 mph. Or more. The propulsion system of this liner was the prototype for our modern super carriers Navy, although the SSUS used conventional boilers to generate steam, while our carriers use nuclear energy.

If you don't know about this pre-jet bad boy (girl), it may well be worth your time to spend a few minutes looking it up. She was truly impressive.
