... I'm two years and change shy of 80 and still an expert marksman, so I know a little bit about ballistics. The article used the word, "nearby" when describing the scene, and that's very vague term; it could mean inches or yards away. I doubt that any reporters were allowed near the scene, so the article was light on details. As I said in my reply, the story was murky and a lot more information would help to clarify what might have happened. I know that it's possible for a weapon, particularly a long gun, to remain on the body, if not completely still in the victim's grasp; I've seen it, and a .30 caliber slug makes a mess you never forget.
My whole point was that, give the paltry info disclosed, in may have been premature to state that it was a suicide, and that the possibility that there was someone else present should not be dismissed until they knew more. If the entry wound was in a place that proved suicide conclusively, then fine. But they did not provide such clarification which invites speculation.
I did not expect to swat the wasp's nest of criticism from the first comment I received, so I'm done with this. My sympathies to the families of the firefighters this asshole murdered.
Have a nice day.
