You most likely smell "off" due to a scent change.
There was a routine disruption and this threw off his "security".
Any new items brought into a home and can cause uncertainly and stress as well.
Give your cat a few days. Wear clothing or a blanket that you left at home that contains your "home" scent. Give your cat some space. He'll be back to his usual self in a few days.
