The begrudgingly given support for desegregation efforts increased the tension within the ‘Dixiecrat’ wing of the party, elevated the political aspirations of George Wallace, and with the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 65 after the assassination, led directly to Nixon’s carving out and subsuming these voters into the Republican Party.
